Painting the Wicked Daemon Flora

First Plague Dryad just about finished. I am going for a quick but agressive-looking unit. I am using the stipple technique that I tried out on my Pink Space Marine in the beginning of the year.

2 sessions with the sponge. Then a wash all over. Then final details and base. Still have to decided if the eyes will be bright green, bright blue or red...

A break from the Eldar / A henchman primed up

I am taking a break from the Eldar army, so I primed this sinister character last night. This is going to be a quick and refreshing paintjob. The Eldar are hard to paint. I guess it is mostly due to my own standards and expectations, but anyway, Eldar always has been a painter's army I think. Especially coming back to finishing Dire Avengers and Wraithguard troops after having gone to town on the Death Jester was giving me a hard time. But the units are almost done, and I feel I am take them for a test game soon to get into that as well. Now, however, I will do a gritty character that I have had around for about a year. The big question is if he will join a Mordheim warband or hang out with my Inquisitor retinues...

WIP Rune Lord

Some mini-painting done this week. Status on the my painting of the new plastic Rune Lord from GW.

What an absolutely awsome model. The sprue-layout, the crispness of the designs, and the assembling of the miniature. A pure pleasure to work with. Painting has so far been easy and fun. I am painting this model purely to enjoy the hobby.

Two more for a combat squad...

Collaborative work between my son and myself. Well, I did the white Grey Knight to the left last year. But over the past 2 weekend my son has painted the two others drybrushing the metal in two stages, and painting in the gold, the basic dark red, and the basecolour for the powerweapons. He also painted the white shield, added a wash to the gold, followed by a drybrush of silver/gold-mix. I helped out with highlights on the red, some lightning effect on the long blade, painting eyes, and detail-work on the white shield. So a lot of help, but certainly also a lot of stuff done by himself. But the best thing was enjoying the process and sensing how proud and happy he was when he had the finished model to move around on the table.

These are his models number 4 and 5. And we still need to do the bases. However, I'll be assembling the remaining two models over the next weeks for the squad to get gaming-ready! Currently the 3 mighty Grey knights are fighting 4th edition High Elves and a half painted Wood Elves Dragon...

If in doubt; go Nurgle...

Colours for the Astartes I am painting. Nurgle is fun, straightforward, and rewarding.
And did I say fast and great for weathering effects?

Cape fabric effects

While occupied with paperwork I recieved a communiqué from the Spiky Rat Pack asking questions regarding my recent endavour with Inquisitor Velk. The Pack wanted knowledge about my dealings with the cape. Here is my return message in brief:

The cape was painted using airbrush over the zenith primed mini. The airbrushing work was done before any other areas were painted.

About 4 successive layers of grey going from dark grey towards light grey/Bleached Bone. The final two layers or so layers were sprayed on at an angle straight from above to get the zenith effect.

Over this I worked in some shades (using various browns, greens, reds) now and then as I was working on the other areas.

When most of the model was done I sponged on some almost pure black with a bit of blister foam. And over this I sponged a light colour - Bleached bone. I also did few "scratch"-highlights on some of the black spots using bleached bone. "Scratch"-highlights meaning that the black sponge marks were highlighted illusionistic by adding a highlight to the grey cape just under the black spot. This makes the black spots looks like tine holes in the fabric.

Finally, I worked in some more washes in certain areas - mainly to emphasize the folds and areas that are in the shadows.

I hope you can use the information provided above. I plan to bring this technique to good use on some Astartes within the year...

Servo Skull Collector, paint phase #2

Another short session on the mini. I have started working green-brown-purple shading into the robes as a subtle form of black lining. The Winsor & Newton green was used with Elf Flesh to paint in the basic shade of the skin.

Also, using thinned P3Thornwood Green (the nameless paint in the picture) I am blending some exaggerations of the shading into the robes.

Paint phase #1 on the daemonhost

The big areas of flesh asked for experimentation. Painting was done over a zenith-style applied spray-priming. Primed in two goes - black from underneath and white from above. Over this I tried mixing Winsor & Newton gloss varnish with The old Citadel Elf Flesh plus some white for the base colour. Painting with this transparent colour the transition shows through leaving a subtle dark grey shading. Adding the gloss varnish gave a slight shine to the colour and also resulted in a very smooth surface. Over this I added colour using various inks - Citadel, Vallejo, W&N, and I have started adding some highlights. That is the flesh so far:

Still a lot of work to do on the flesh. On the rest of the mini I have just blocked colours in and added some washes to darken the areas. For the overall colour scheme I am planning towards a mix of black, white, gold, and flesh ... with a hint of purple, and finally with a strong but weathered yellow dominating the base. I'm really with the direction of the paintjob so far and I look forward to see where it will go from here.
